Description
This is a mid-to-late 19th-century mine captain’s house, now a house, along with a freestanding mine chimney. The house is constructed of slatestone and granite rubble with brick dressings. It has a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends, and gable end stacks. The freestanding chimney, located about 30 metres to the east, is of circular plan and built of slatestone rubble with a brick cornice.
The house has a double-depth plan, with principal rooms to the front left and right, each heated by a gabled end stack; it includes shallow rear service rooms. A one-room plan addition was added to the right end in the late 19th century, but has been rebuilt in the late 20th century. The front of the house is symmetrical, with two storeys and a three-window arrangement. All windows are 19th-century 16-pane sashes within cambered brick arches and brick jambs. A central 4-panelled door has an overlight. A lower, one-storey and loft addition to the right has two 16-pane sashes on the ground floor and two raking dormers, each with a 2-light casement. The right end has two 20th-century doors at ground floor and two 2-light casements at first floor. The left end has a 20th-century garage attached; the first floor has a 12-pane sash with a brick surround to the right. The rear has randomly arranged 20th-century windows. The chimney is circular, tapers upwards, and features an inspection hole at the base.
