Description

Phoenix House is a late 19th-century mine captain's house located at Phoenix United Mine, now used as a residence. The building is constructed of granite rubble with granite quoins and features a hipped slate roof adorned with lead rolls at the hips and ridge, along with deep eaves. The house has a double depth plan with a central entrance, and the main rooms are situated to the front on both the right and left sides, while service rooms are located at the rear. All front and rear rooms are heated by side stacks, and there is an unheated service addition from the late 19th century on the left side.

The exterior of the house is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical three-window range. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has a central panelled door set in a shallow porch with an overlight and cornice. To the left of the door is a 16-pane sash window, and to the right is a 20th-century French window. Attached to the left is a single-storey rendered lean-to that includes a two-light 20th-century casement window at the front. The right side of the house has a central 8-pane sash window on both the ground and first floors, while the left side features two 4-pane lights on the first floor. The lean-to has a 4-pane sash window, a door, and a two-light casement. At the rear, there are 12-pane sash windows on both the ground and first floors to the left and right, along with a central two-storey square bay made of brick. The ground floor of the bay is rendered and includes a 16-pane sash window and a door on the side, while the first floor has two 12-pane sashes, with additional 12-pane sashes on each side, separated by pilasters. The interior of the house is not accessible.
