Description
Wheal Maria is a mine captain's house, now divided into two houses, dating from around the mid-19th century with some later alterations. The building is constructed of rubble, rendered and lined out at the front, and features a slate roof with gable end stacks. It has an L-shaped plan formed by a rear wing on the left, now numbered 23, and a front range that is double depth with a central entry and principal rooms on either side, with the rear wing originally intended for service.
The house is two storeys high and symmetrical, with three windows on a plinth, all of which are 16-pane sashes. The central porch has a pitched roof and double half-glazed doors, with the inner half-glazed door featuring an overlight with Gothic glazing. The porch also has sidelights with margin glazing. The left gable end has a 12-pane sash window on the ground floor to the left. The right gable end is rendered and has an off-centre porch to the right, which includes a half-glazed door with glazing bars and plain pilasters on either side. The inner door is a six-panelled design with an overlight featuring margin glazing, and there are six-pane sidelights also with margin glazing. The second entrance may have been used for the mining business, while the main entrance is at the front.
At the rear of the main range, there is a 16-pane sash window with a cambered brick head on both the ground and first floors to the left. The two-storey rear wing has a four-panelled door and a three-light casement window with eight panes in each light on the inner side, along with two hipped dormers, each with a 12-pane sash. The wing is built in painted random rubble. The rear of the wing features a single-storey lean-to and a gable end stack, with the roof of the wing hipped at the junction with the main range. The interior has not been inspected, but it is said to have a date inscribed on a pane of glass at the front on the first floor, reading August 16th, 1877.
