Description

Combe Vale Cottage is a house that was formerly part of a row of houses, with a lean-to on the left side of the former house. It dates from the early 18th century and has later 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of mixed slatestone and granite rubble, which is whitewashed, with some brick elements, and features a slate roof with a gable stack on the left side.

The cottage has a two-room plan, with a central entrance that leads into the room on the left. There was originally another cottage to the left, which now only survives as the lean-to. The gable end stack on the left would have also served this former cottage. The structure is two storeys high and has three windows, all of which are 20th-century two-light casements.

There is a central rubble porch with a shallow-pitched slate roof, featuring a plain door set in a moulded frame with strap hinges. The lean-to on the left rises to the eaves level and has a two-light casement window at ground floor, with brick quoins on the right side. The right return has a blank gable end, while the left return angles towards the rear left, where the lean-to continues at a lower level with a 20th-century door and a two-light casement window.

At the rear, there is a single-storey lean-to with a corrugated iron roof. The rear of the main house has a three-pane light at both the ground and first floors on the left side. Inside, the room on the left has a fireplace with a timber lintel and an oven to the right, which is a cloam oven. The room on the right features a wall plate supported by irregular slatestone corbels and a door with strap hinges. The fireplace in the lean-to has a flat timber lintel with an oven that has a cast iron door to the left, and granite jambs with an additional recess to the left.
