Description

Woodland View is a mine captain's house, now a residential property, built around 1850-1860, with some later alterations. The building features rubble slate-hung and painted walls, a two-span slate roof with brick gable stacks on the front range, and a further rear range with a hipped roof. It consists of three parallel ranges, with the front range having a central passage and rooms on either side. The house is two storeys high and has three windows: 12-pane sashes with voussoirs on the first floor and 16-pane sashes with voussoirs on the ground floor. A fine central porch with double doors is half-glazed, featuring diamond and margin glazing, a panelled lower section, and fluted pilasters with plain capitals on each side. The porch also has a frieze with roundels, triglyphs, and guttae, along with a dentil cornice.

The left return of the building has the first range rendered and a large stepped external stack, while the second range is colourwashed and includes a single-storey 20th-century glazed porch. The inner door of this porch has nine panes in the upper part and a two-panelled lower part. The left side features a 16-pane sash with a cambered brick head on both the ground and first floors. The third range is entirely slate-hung, with the middle range containing a ground floor 2-light 8-pane casement, which may have originally been a door, and a 20-pane sash on both the ground and first floors. The rear range, which is lower than the front two ranges, has a glazed door with a sidelight and overlight, and a 16-pane sash on the first floor.

Inside, the front right room has a 20th-century fireplace, previously flanked by slate pilasters, with panelled cupboards featuring fluted pilasters on either side. The front rooms have panelled doors, and the central passage includes an inner door with three panels, decorated with a Greek key design on the upper and lower panels. The front left room also has a 20th-century fireplace with cupboards on either side, which have doors with 6-pane lights and margin glazing, along with tiered shelves. The middle range features a central dog-leg staircase with a wreathed handrail and stick balusters, as well as dado panelling. The Devon Great Consols Mine, which opened in 1844, provides historical context for the building.
