Milestone C.235M West Of West End Bungalow

The milestone located approximately 235 meters west of West End Bungalow in Probus is a granite structure dating from the 1830s. It is positioned on the verge on the northern side of the A390, known as Truck Hill, and is situated to the west of the village. The milestone has a rectangular shape with an arched top, standing 36 inches high and 18 inches wide. The front of the stone is inscribed with the words "FROM / TRURO / 5 / MILES," painted white with black lettering. Additionally, there is a benchmark carved into the face beneath the inscription.

Historically, this milestone is part of a series of twelve that were established following the creation of the first Cornish turnpike in 1754, which led to the formation of several Turnpike Trusts and the construction of new roads. This particular milestone is one of eleven that remain, marking the route from Truro to Fraddon.

The milestone is designated for its historic interest, as it reflects the development of the transport network in Cornwall. It is a well-preserved example of an early 19th-century milestone, remaining unaltered except for the addition of the benchmark, and it has not been relocated. It also holds strong group value with the other surviving milestones along the road between Truro and Fraddon.
