Description

The chest tomb to the Francis family is located 2 meters south of the west end of the Church of Saint Wenappa in Gwennap. This early 19th-century tomb is made of white limestone and has a rectangular shape, oriented from west to east. It is set within a rectangular outer base that features holes for iron stanchions, which once supported railings that have since been removed.

The chest itself has an ovolo-moulded base and panelled sides, with one panel on each end and a round-headed niche containing an urn in the middle of the south side. Each corner of the tomb is adorned with high-waisted bulbous nook balusters, which are square in plan and have moulded bases and capitals. The lid of the tomb is an incised monolith with an ovolo-moulded border, inscribed with the names and details of William Francis, who died in 1830 at the age of 53; his son Benjamin Francis, who died in 1843 at the age of 23; and his son William Francis, who died in 1819 at the age of 11.
