Description
GWENNAP CHURCHTOWN, Gwennap SW 74 SW 4/116 Chest tomb to Francis family 2m - south of west end of Church of Saint Wenappa GV II Chest tomb. Early C19, for Francis family. White limestone. Rectangular on plan, orientated west to east. Set within rectangular outer base with holes for iron stanchions for removed railings. Chest has ovolo-moulded base and panelled sides; 1 panel to each end and round-headed niche with urn to middle of south side. Each corner has high-waisted bulbous nook baluster, square on plan and with moulded base and capital. Ovolo-moulded border to incised monolith lid with inscription to: William Francis, died 1830, aged 53; son Benjamin Francis, died 1843, aged 23, and son William Francis, died 1819, aged 11.
