Description

This chest tomb, located 2 meters north of the northwest corner of the Church of St Wenappa in Gwennap, is likely from the 18th century. It was created for the Harris family by D Pearce of Truro. The tomb features granite ashlar sides and a slate lid, and it is rectangular in shape, oriented from west to east. The lid has a recessed panel that originally held inscriptions, all of which are in incised Roman lettering. The inscriptions commemorate John Harris, a gentleman who was baptized in 1652, married Alice Pelloe in 1677, and died in 1705; his son John Harris, who was baptized in 1678, married Elizabeth Beauchamp in 1703, and died in 1731; and Henry Harris, another son, who was baptized in 1730, married Agatha, the daughter of Robert and Alice Vivian of Rosewarne, and died in 1778, along with later inscriptions.
