Description
The Francis chest tomb, located approximately 5 metres southeast of the tower of the Church of St Michael in Otterton, dates from 1861 and commemorates John Francis. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a chest tomb design with a low-ridged lid that has moulding around the edges, resting on a moulded plinth. The corners of the tomb have small chamfers, and each side is adorned with rectangular panels defined by shallow rebates. The long sides include large central panels flanked by narrow upright panels. The southern side bears an inscription; the first line is in Gothic capitals, while the rest is in plain capitals, recording the tomb's erection in memory of John Francis, who died in 1861. The other sides also feature inscriptions that document the deaths of several relatives.
