Description
The Otterton War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of granite. It features a two-stepped square stone base topped by a chamfered granite cross on a square plinth. The stone plinth at the base of the cross bears an inscription that honors the parishioners of Otterton who lost their lives in the First World War from 1914 to 1918, as well as those who served in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945. The inscription reads:
THIS MEMORIAL/WAS ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS/TO THE GLORY OF GOD/AND IN REMEMBRANCE OF/THE MEN OF OTTERTON/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/1914-1918/THESE MEN OF OURS, UNSELFISH, UNAFRAID/WENT TO THE WORLD-WIDE FIGHT/FORGET NOT HOW THEY FOUGHT, AND HOW WE PRAYED/FOR ENGLAND AND THE RIGHT/THEIR NAMES LIVE FOR EVERMORE/R.I.P./(NAMES)/1939-1945/(NAMES)
The memorial was unveiled by Lord Clinton on 1 August 1920. In 2008, the base and surrounding path were restored. The Otterton War Memorial is recognized for its significant design and craftsmanship, as well as its poignant representation of the community's response to the tragedies of war.
