Description

No. 15 is a cottage located on The Green in Otterton, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. It is built from plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or brick stacks that are topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The front features a thatched roof, while the rear has been replaced with slate. The cottage has a two-room plan and faces north onto The Green, with a central cross passage that contains stairs and end stacks shared with the adjoining cottages, No. 17 and No. 11.

The building is two storeys high, with a rear outshot behind the left room that contains the original kitchen, which has a stack backing onto the main block. The front has three windows, but their symmetry is disrupted by differing sizes. The left ground floor window is a 20-pane sash, and above it is a 19th-century horizontal sliding sash. The remaining windows are late 19th to early 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The central doorway features an original six-fielded panel door and a contemporary moulded doorcase with a pediment. The roof is continuous with the adjoining cottages.

Inside, the cottage includes 19th-century joinery details, though the roof has not been inspected. No. 15 is part of an attractive row of contemporary cottages near the Church of St Michael and Otterton Mill, showcasing a unique blend of vernacular cob and thatch with more refined 19th-century details in the doorways and some windows.
