Description
Brook House is a house, originally two separate dwellings, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century in Otterton. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble and brick, with some cob sections, and has a slate roof. The building was initially planned as a pair of cottages with two rooms each, facing north onto Fore Street. Each cottage had a central staircase and a single rear lateral stack. Continuous outshots along the rear are likely a later addition. The main block is two storeys high and has an irregular 4-window front; two first-floor windows have been blocked, disrupting an original symmetrical arrangement. The left (eastern) cottage retains its original 3-window arrangement, with a central doorway containing a later 18th to early 19th century 6-panel door. Above the door is a contemporary 12-pane sash window, flanked by 16-pane sashes on both sides. The right (western) cottage was likely similar but has lost two of its first-floor windows. The building has a curving corner where Fore Street meets Maunders Hill. It features plain, deep eaves, and the roof abuts the adjoining property to the left and is hipped to the right. The interior remains unexamined. Brook House is one of a group of attractive listed buildings along Otterton Fore Street.
