Description

The Francis monument stands in the churchyard of St Thomas à Becket at Pucklechurch, positioned about 21 metres south of the church nave. It is an early-19th-century chest tomb in limestone, commemorating William Francis (died 1803) and other members of the Francis family.

The monument features a flat top with moulded edge and a moulded plinth. The four corners are finished with quarter baluster forms bearing incised detail. The south-facing side displays a pair of octagonal panels with centrally twined ribbons. The north side shows a pair of circular panels, each surrounded by palm leaves and decorated with three putti, though the lowest figure has largely deteriorated. The eastern face carries an oval panel, while the western face displays a shield panel with a ribbon above and flambeaux below.

The monument is designated for its quality as a good example of early-19th-century chest tomb design, and for its group value in relation to the Grade I-listed church of St Thomas à Becket and other listed tombs within the churchyard.
