Description
This is an early 19th-century chest tomb located in the churchyard of St Thomas à Beckett, Pucklechurch, approximately one metre north of the north aisle of the church. The limestone monument is rectangular and features a flat top with a moulded edge, quarter balusters, and a moulded plinth. North and south faces feature inscription panels separated by a central moulded division, but the inscriptions have been lost due to erosion.
The history of Pucklechurch dates back to Roman times and developed into an important Anglo-Saxon administrative center. It was a royal hunting lodge and granted to Glastonbury Abbey in AD 950, later transferred to Bath Abbey. The village experienced rebuilding and growth in the 16th century, followed by a period of expansion in the mid-19th century with the opening of local collieries.
St Thomas à Beckett church likely originated in the Norman period, with the main structure dating to the 13th century, and subsequent additions and alterations made in the 14th, 17th, and 19th centuries by architects R.C. Carpenter and J.D. Sedding. The tomb is designated at Grade II for its architectural merit as a good example of an early 19th-century chest tomb and for its group value in relation to the Grade I listed church and other listed tombs in the churchyard.
