Description

The Miners and Mechanics Institute, built in 1893, includes boundary walls, gate-piers, and railings. It was established by J. Passmore Edwards, with a design by W.J. Wills. The building features granite dressings made from Killas, with dry Delabole slate gabled roofs and brick chimneys at both ends. It has cast-iron ogee-section gutters. The layout consists of two main rooms on either side of a central entrance hall, with additional rooms at the back.

The exterior is a single storey with a symmetrical three-bay front, where each gabled bay projects slightly from the main wall. The central bay contains a round-headed doorway with a hoodmould, and above it is a coped gable with a moulded cornice, flanked by pinnacles and topped with a shaped finial. Inside the gable is a shallow niche displaying the initials J.P.E. and the date 1893. The central entrance features original panelled doors and a fanlight with coloured glass, along with a clock. The flanking bays also have coped gables with moulded kneelers and finials, and the stepped tripartite mullioned windows include round-headed central lights and transoms. The original small-paned windows have marginal panes in the upper lights.

The garden in front of the institute is bordered by rubble walls topped with granite copings and features original ornate cast-iron railings. The gate-piers and terminal piers are square in plan, made of rock-faced granite and capped with pyramidal tops. This institute is one of four established in Cornwall through donations from J. Passmore Edwards.
