Steele Farmhouse And Adjoining Outbuilding

Steele Farmhouse and the adjoining outbuilding are located in Week St Mary. The farmhouse has a core that dates back to the 17th century, with additions from the 19th century and alterations made in the 20th century. It features whitewashed, rendered cob on a slatestone rubble plinth, with an unrendered slatestone rubble and granite porch. The 19th-century addition is made of slatestone rubble with brick dressings, and the roof is slate, with asbestos slates on the rear.

The 17th-century section is two stories high and three windows wide, featuring a canted two-tier bay that projects above the eaves line under a hipped slate roof. The windows are 20th-century sash windows with glazing bars. There is a late 19th-century off-centre gabled porch with a granite cross above a two-centred granite arch that includes granite kneelers, some of which may be earlier reused dressings. The ground floor window to the left is a 20th-century sash with glazing bars, and the first-floor window to the left is similar. Above the porch, there is a four-pane opening.

The lower range is two stories high and two windows wide, featuring a rendered brick chimney on the left gable end and 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. The ground floor room to the left of the porch has a 20th-century granite fireplace, along with two cross beams, one of which has a step stop, and axial ceiling beams. The ground floor room to the right has a partially blocked fireplace but likely retains an earlier lintel and jambs.

The attached barn on the right gable end has a ridge that is the same height as the farmhouse and is also slated. The barn's rendering has a rougher texture and features only one opening. The barn is included for its group value with the farmhouse.
