Description

New College is a late 19th-century house, possibly with earlier elements, that incorporates two tympana from the 1508 Old College complex. It is built of polyphant ashlar with granite quoins, featuring gable-end chimneys rendered and a slate roof. The right gable end was partially rebuilt in brick, with the granite tympana incorporated into the masonry. The house is two rooms deep and has an entrance into a stair hall. The design is symmetrical with two storeys and a three-window range, including a central enclosed gabled porch with fish scale roof tiles. The windows are 20th-century timber sash windows, eight panes per sash, with stone arches over the ground-floor openings. Incomplete tympana are built into the right gable end; one displays a central shield similar to the entrance of the Old College, and the other features a central shield with smaller shields on either side. The building is included on the list for its group value with the adjacent Old College.
