Description

A pair of attached houses, dating from circa 1790, now combined into a single dwelling. The houses are constructed of rendered limestone ashlar with limestone dressings. They feature coped party walls with truncated stacks and slate mansard roofs. The design is in the Late Georgian style, with a double-depth plan. Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, and they present a three-window facade. A cornice band and parapet are topped with a ground-floor plat band. The right-hand house has a doorway on the left, while the left-hand house has a doorway in the return. Both doorways feature pilasters leading to open pediments and semicircular arched doorways, the right side of which has been blocked. The left-hand doorway has a plate-glass fanlight, a fluted reeded transom, and a six-panel door. There are horned six-over-six-pane sashes to the ground floor, with three-over-six-pane sashes to the second floor. A full attic storey is present on the right-hand side. The return facade to the left is a symmetrical five-window range with a narrow six-over-nine-pane semicircular-arched stair light above the door, and a central six-over-three-pane sash on the second floor. A projecting basement area was originally surrounded by a raised pavement, which has since been removed from the front, revealing basement sashes with steps leading up to the left end. The interior features an entrance hall from the left-hand doorway, divided by a panelled elliptical arch from a central open-well staircase with stick balusters, a ramped and banded rail, and a curtail. A 20th-century staircase is located on the right. Cornices bear decorative friezes, and the front rooms have panelled arched recesses. The building also features panelled shutters and six-panel doors. The building was restored in 1992.
