Description
Numbers 15 to 24 form a terrace of nine houses, likely designed by William Paty around 1790. The houses are rendered with limestone dressings, have party wall stacks, and a pantile mansard roof. They follow a double-depth plan and are in a Late Georgian style. Each house has three storeys, an attic, a basement, and a three-window front, with Number 16 having five windows, and Number 24 having six. The terrace features a plat band, cornice, and parapet. The entrances are on the left-hand side, central to the end houses. They have imposts, triglyphs and pediments to semicircular arches, fanlights, and six-panel doors. Number 17 has a distinctive batswing fanlight with a lantern. Windows are primarily 6/6-pane sashes, with various dormers. Tented wrought-iron balconies are present at Numbers 17, with Gothic rails, and at Number 21, featuring batswing spandrels and stele to the rails. Numbers 23 and 24 were formerly separate houses and have rebuilt backs. Early 19th-century shopfronts are found in the projecting basements, and Number 17 has a shallow bowed window with 20 panes. The interior has not been inspected. A raised front pavement is attached, complete with wrought-iron front area railings and urn finials. This was designed as part of a square-plan development with houses at Numbers 1-14 and 25-35 Richmond Terrace. The pavement is flagged and raised over the front cellars, with railings and lamp holders.
