Description

Number 4 is a house, now used as offices, built around 1760. It features roughcast walls, brick end stacks, and a pantile roof. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three stories high with a basement, presenting a symmetrical three-window facade. The central doorway is topped by an open pediment supported by pilasters, leading to a six-panel door and a plain fanlight. On either side of the entrance are two-storey canted bays, which have an entablature with triglyphs at the ground floor and a cornice at the first floor. The windows include 6/6-pane sashes flanking 8/8-pane sashes, with the upper windows featuring flush sash boxes, 6/6-pane sashes above the door, and paired 12/12-pane sashes above the bays.

Inside, there is a wide central through-hall with a modillion cornice and a flagged floor. A fine open-well staircase is located at the rear right, showcasing urn-and-column balusters, a wide curtail, a ramped handrail, and fluted panels. There is also a niche with a pastoral plasterwork scene at the head, along with fireplaces in the hall and upstairs rooms. The cellars are notable for their round-arched vaults.

The property is complemented by wrought-iron railings with small ball finials in the front area, which include an overthrow arch and an ashlar pier to the right. The left-hand bay is separated from the main house and has its own set of railings.
