GV II

Soap works, now warehouse. Lower stages 1841/3, upper 1882. For Christopher Thomas and Brothers. Brick, roof not visible. Open plan. 5 storeys; 7-window range. Shallow full-height segmental-arched recesses have segmental-arched windows with iron frames; a polychrome Florentine battlemented parapet, with decapitated corner turrets and octagonal SW chimney; gable ends each of similar 2-window range with oculi. INTERIOR: entirely reconstructed. HISTORICAL NOTE: Built for Charles Thomas Brothers' soap works. Loxton's engraving (c1890) shows machicolated towers to the E end, and a bellcote to the gable of the W end. The conventional stripped elevations are embellished with distinctly Florentine or Sienese Quattrocento details; it is a prominent townscape feature. (Loxton S L: Bristol: 1885-).
