Description

Gardiner's Warehouse is a warehouse built in 1865 by W.B. Gingell, with the Broad Plain elevation added in 1884 by C. James for Christopher Thomas and Brothers. The building features rock-faced Pennant ashlar, grey and red Pennant ashlar, and rubble, along with limestone dressings, showcasing a Bristol Byzantine style with structural polychromy. It stands three storeys high and has five bays. The facade includes rock-faced architraves to semicircular-arched doorways beneath recessed semicircular-arched bays, all set beneath a bracketed cornice.

To the right end, there is a four-storey block that mirrors the Broad Street elevation, also four storeys high with a five-window range. The base has a battered plinth of rock-faced Pennant beneath the ashlar walls, featuring tall semicircular-arched openings that rise to the first floor, complete with rock-faced voussoirs and a deep impost band. Above a plat band, the walls are made of red ashlar, articulated by wide pilasters leading to semicircular-arched recessed bays with dentilled imposts and hoods. The second-floor windows are paired and have plain ashlar surrounds, while the upper section consists of squared, coursed rubble with a plat band and moulded cornice coping. At the center, there is a worn panel depicting an Assyrian Lion, which was an old trade name, adorned with palmette decoration.

On the northern corner, a large rectangular tower features narrow round-headed panels, deep imposts, and an overhanging coping. The interior has not been inspected. Originally, the warehouse was part of Christopher Thomas and Brothers' soap works.
