Description
Numbers 16 to 30 Alfred Place comprise a terrace of eight houses built around 1788. The houses are stucco-faced with brick and limestone detailing, featuring party wall stacks and pantile roofs. The rooflines differ, with a mansard roof to numbers 26 to 30 and a hipped double-pile roof to numbers 16 to 24.
The architecture is Mid Georgian in style. The terrace was constructed in two phases, as evidenced by the cornices which ramp up from numbers 24 to 30. A distinctive feature is the alternate-sided doorways, each with a brick semicircular arch incorporating stepped keys and alternate stone blocks to the architraves, topped by 4-pane fanlights and 6-panel doors. The two-storey canted bays and three-storey sections (numbers 16 and 26 to 30) have a second-floor sill band, with 6/6-pane windows flanked by 4/4-pane sashes within exposed frames. Second-floor windows are 6/6-pane sashes.
Inside number 16, the entrance hall is divided by a semicircular arch supported on fluted pilasters. There’s a dogleg staircase with stick balusters, column newels, and a ramped rail. The front room on the first floor contains panelled wainscot and a cast-iron fireplace with a plain surround, alongside 4-panel doors.
Attached wrought-iron railings run between the bays. Numbers 26 to 30 have winder steps leading up to a shared area, with lamp baskets located at numbers 26 and 28.
