Description

This is a pair of attached houses located on St Matthew’s Road, Bristol. They were originally built in the late 18th century and extended during the 19th century and late 20th century. The houses are constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, and have a hipped pantile roof. Each house is of double-depth plan and has three storeys plus a cellar. They are designed in a late Georgian style, with a three-window front. One of the original houses had a single-depth plan with additional rooms added to the rear in the mid-19th century. The frontages are plain and have a parapet. The left-hand doorways have surrounds, consoles and canopies sheltering four-panel doors. They have 8/8-pane sash windows. Number 28 has a second window range to the right of the doorway, featuring a stair light with margin bars and a 6/6-pane sash above it. The interior of number 28 includes an entrance hall with a dogleg staircase to the right of the doorway. The staircase has an uncut string, column-on-vase balusters and square newels. There are also two-panel doors, panelled shutters, and a vaulted cellar.
