Description
Numbers 12 and 12A, Kingsdown Parade consist of an attached pair of houses dating to the late 18th century. The houses are constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, brick to the rear, brick end stacks, and a pantile mansard roof. They are built on a double-depth plan and represent a mid-Georgian style.
The three-storey, basement, and attic building has a four-window front. The front elevation features banded rustication to a first-floor plat band, rusticated pilasters to the cornice, and a parapet. The centrally-placed front doors include a pedimented doorcase with pilasters and triglyphs to the left, with a plate-glass fanlight and a six-panel door, while the right-hand door features a semicircular arch with a plate-glass fanlight and a 20th-century six-panel door. A single ground floor window is located to the left, and two to the right. The windows are largely 6/6-pane horned sashes on the ground and first floors, with 3/6-pane sashes to the second floor, and casement dormers in the roof. The rear of Number 12 incorporates a full-height canted bay with flush-set 6/6-pane sashes, while Number 12A extends back with a wide, mid-19th century brick bay set between deep ashlar pilasters, and a 20th-century brick attic storey. A tented ground-floor verandah above the basement has cast-iron railings and batswing supports, and stepped voussoirs frame the 6/6-pane sashes.
The interior of Number 12A has been remodelled in the mid-19th century, featuring a re-positioned, lateral dogleg staircase with slender turned balusters and a ramped rail, along with 18th and 19th century wainscotting, panelled shutters, six-panel doors, and fireplaces. A vaulted cellar contains a cistern and a bread oven.
Attached to the front of the properties are cast-iron area railings with obelisk finials. Further subsidiary features include Pennant stone steps and piers to the rear paving of Number 12A, and an attached rear garden wall to Number 12.
