Description

Marlborough House, built around 1740, is a house located on Marlborough Hill in Kingsdown, Bristol. It features a combination of limestone ashlar and render, topped with a slate hipped roof. The house has a double-depth plan with a projecting wing on the left side and is designed in the mid-Georgian style. It stands three storeys high with a basement and has a symmetrical front with five windows. The façade is accentuated by giant pilasters leading to a cornice, with an attic that extends behind the former parapet.

There are swept steps leading up to a raised doorway, which is framed by pilasters, triglyphs, and a pediment. The semicircular-arched doorway includes a plate-glass fanlight and a six-panel door. The windows consist of six-over-six pane sashes and three-over-six pane sashes on the top floor. The street front has two storeys with a four-window range and features a right-hand door flanked by brick piers and stone blocks, topped with a pediment.

Inside, the house was remodelled in 1991, showcasing a central hall that leads to a large open-well staircase with column-on-vase newels. There is also a second-floor rear open-well staircase with stick balusters and a ramped rail, along with cornices and six-panel doors.

Additional features include 19th-century cast-iron railings leading up to the steps and a wrought-iron lamp basket above the door. An attached rubble wall runs beside the road to the south.
