Description

Devon House is a detached house built around 1760 by William Paty. It has group value as a significant example of mid-18th century architecture in Bristol. The house is constructed of limestone ashlar above a rubble basement, with a roof that is not visible. It is planned on a double-depth format and has three storeys and a basement, with a three-window front. The ground floor is rusticated, with a plat band, pilasters, a cornice and a parapet. A semicircular-arched doorway on the left side features incised voussoirs, slim fluted columns above the transom, an eight-light fanlight, and a six-panel door, with similarly treated incised voussoirs to the ground-floor windows, which contain six over six pane sashes. Smaller sash windows are on the second floor. Twentieth-century basement windows have been inserted. "DEVON HOUSE" is inscribed on the plat band. A semicircular-arched stair window in the left return has interlacing and etched glass. Adjacent to the left is a single-storey brick block with a matching cornice and parapet, a single window with stepped voussoirs, and a six over six pane sash. Steps lead down to a twentieth-century entrance door in the front area. Inside, the entrance hall has arched recesses flanking a semicircular niche, and a central, open-well staircase with a curtail, slender column balusters, a ramped and wreathed rail with cross banding, six-panel doors, panelled shutters and cornices. Attached cast-iron front area railings and gates are present, with urn finials.
