Description

This is a terrace of four houses and shops, built in the early 19th century, with alterations to the shop fronts in the mid- to late-19th century. The buildings are located on The Mall, Clifton, Bristol. The construction is stucco with limestone dressings, featuring party wall stacks and a pantile hipped mansard roof. The layout is a double-depth plan. Each house is three storeys high with an attic and basement, and features a 2-window arrangement to numbers 19 and 21, and a 1-window arrangement to numbers 23 and 25. The terrace is stepped, with a ramped parapet and a ramped cornice to numbers 23 and 25, with articulation by pilaster strips. Number 19 has a 19th-century shop front with a central doorway, flanked by plate-glass windows and reeded pilaster jambs supporting a fascia and cornice that curves over the door. Number 21 has a left-hand semicircular-arched doorway with a plate-glass fanlight and a 6-panel door, alongside a 19th-century shop front with pilaster jambs and a fascia cornice. Number 23 has a right-hand semicircular-arched doorway with a batwing fanlight and a 6-panel door, and a shop front similar to number 21, including semicircular-arched window panes. Number 25 has a 20th-century shop front. The first-floor windows are 6/6-pane sashes; number 25 has 2/2-pane sashes; the second-floor sashes have margin panes for numbers 19 and 21, and are paired at number 23. Paired dormers are present in the roof. The left-hand return elevation has a single-window range, featuring a semicircular-arched doorway with a 5-pane fanlight and a 6-panel door, with semicircular-arched windows above. The interior has not been inspected.
