Description
A terrace of fifteen houses, numbers 1 to 15, built around 1825 in Clifton, Bristol. The houses are stuccoed with limestone dressings, with party wall stacks and slate mansard roofs. They follow a double-depth plan and are built in the late Georgian style. Each house has three storeys, an attic, a basement and a single-window front. The terrace is stepped and articulated with pilaster strips extending to a cornice and parapet, with a slope down from numbers 1 to 10. The right-hand doorways are semicircular-arched, with raised surrounds featuring split keys and impost mouldings, fanlights (number 7 has a lantern, and number 4 a teardrop fanlight), reeded transoms and six-panel doors with corners removed from the upper panels. The windows are mostly 6/6-pane sashes, with triple sashes (3/6/6 panes) to the first floor of numbers 3 to 10. French windows with margin panes are present at numbers 1 and 2. First-floor balconies have wrought-iron pointed-arched railings with quatrefoils, though these are missing from number 10. Balconies are tented except at numbers 5, 11 and 15. Tented wrought-iron porches are at numbers 1 and 4. The rear elevations feature 4/6-pane sashes at numbers 1 and 2, while numbers 3 and 4 have semicircular-arched stair lights in flush frames. Various dormers are present. Internally, the entrance halls have semicircular arches, and the rear staircases are dogleg with stick balusters, column newels, and ramped handrails. Panelled shutters and six-panel doors are also features. The raised front basement areas have steps and wrought-iron railings. Numbers 11 to 15 have a raised, flagged pavement with spear-headed wrought-iron railings. Numbers 1 and 2 were constructed slightly earlier than the rest of the terrace.
