Description
No 48 on Wallisdown Road is a picturesque cottage dating from around 1850. It features a ground floor and a semi-attic, constructed of buff brick with some grey headers. The building is arranged in an L shape and is positioned diagonally to the road, with a lean-to timber verandah-porch at the corner. The cottage has mullioned casement windows with diamond lattice glazing; there are three-light windows with transoms on the ground floor and two-light windows on the first floor. The roofs are steeply pitched and adorned with ornamental scalloped tiles arranged in bands that alternate with ordinary tiles, extending low at the rear and featuring overhanging eaves and plain bargeboards. The gable ends include canted bays with hipped roofs on the ground floor, while the first floor has a blind gable with two-light windows elsewhere. A pair of chimneystacks is set diagonally on the ridge. This building is part of a group of listed buildings along Wallisdown Road and Columbia Road.
