Description
No. 8 St James's Close, formerly known as No. 8 West Street, is a house dating from around 1760. It is constructed of brick with a painted brick plinth, stucco dressings, a brick ridge stack, and a pantile roof. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, featuring a three-window range. It has a plinth and a moulded brick eaves cornice.
There are steps leading up to a right-hand round-arched doorway, which is flanked by pilasters and topped with an open pediment. The doorway includes a radial fanlight and a six-panel door with panelled reveals. The windows are adorned with gauged brick arches over six-over-six pane sashes. To the left, there is a hipped dormer with three-over-three pane sashes and a fanlight to the right. The rear south wing has hipped dormers.
The interior retains several original features, including a panelled winder stair with column newels, a plank and muntin partition in the roof, and a well-preserved 18th-century roof. Additionally, there are marble fireplaces with corner roundels and decorative cornices.
