Description
Nos 17 to 21 West Hill Road, formerly the Bournemouth School of Art, were built around 1880. The ground floor has been remodeled for motor showrooms. The building is three storeys high, constructed of pink brick with minimal stone detailing, including bases, capitals, and cornices. The upper floors are divided into three sections by large Ionic brick pilasters, which support an entablature, a modillion cornice, and a pediment that features a sculptured coat-of-arms, flanked by a balustraded parapet. The first-floor windows are round-arched, except for a wider, flattened central window, and are accented by small Composite pilasters. The second-floor windows have straight heads and are also divided by pilasters, with capitals that are wider than the pilasters and supported on console brackets. The rear elevation facing West Hill Road uses the same materials and features tripartite windows with brick pilaster-mullions across three floors, topped by a long glazed dormer strip of studios and a shaped gable with a Venetian window. This building is part of a group with other nearby properties, including the Pembroke Hotel and additional buildings on Poole Hill.
