Description
The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, formerly known as the Art School, is located at 68 Hope Street. This building was designed by Willink and Thicknesse and completed in 1910. It is a two-storey structure featuring twelve bays, with a central rectangular porch that has rusticated stonework and a cornice. The porch is flanked by fluted Doric columns leading to the doorway. The central three bays have tripartite sash windows with glazing bars, while the sides feature three bay bows with pilasters. The building is topped with an entablature and a parapet, and has a mansard roof with flat-topped dormers. There are also iron area railings.
The Mount Street front and the three bay return to Hope Street were designed by Thomas Cook in 1882. This section is also two storeys with a basement and consists of thirteen bays. The three bay ends and the central bays project forward. Each floor has flat pilasters and entablatures, with round-headed windows on the ground floor that have swags on the apron panels. The first floor end windows are round-headed with flat-topped dormers, and there is a central pedimented panel that displays the date.
