Description

Portsmouth High School for Girls is a school building constructed in 1886 by Osborne Smith. It is designed in a Neo-Dutch style and features red brick in Flemish bond with a Welsh slate roof. The building has three storeys and a basement, with a total of nine bays arranged in a 3:3:3 configuration.

At the center, there is an 8-panelled double door, with the upper panels glazed, set beneath a rounded arch. This entrance is flanked by two sash windows, each consisting of four panes with two fixed panes above, also under rounded arches with roll moulded surrounds. Access to the entrance is via 11 stone steps, which are bordered by brick balustrades and end piers.

On either side of the entrance, there are external stacks that flank the center, channelled above the gables and topped with brick cornices. To the right, there are three 4-pane sash windows, each with 2-pane ventilator lights above, set under rubbed brick segmental arches. To the left, there are two similar sash windows and two smaller ones. A deep brick sillband runs along the building.

On the first floor, there are nine 12-pane sash windows, each with a 3-pane ventilator light above, set under segmental brick arches with brick keystones. A brick dentilled cornice is located above this level. The second floor features nine sash windows, each set under a segmental brick arch with projecting brick labels. The central sash in each of the three sections is taller, consisting of 12 panes with a 3-pane ventilator light above, flanked by 12-pane sashes.

The building is crowned with three shaped brick gables, with the outer gables featuring rounded tops and the center gable adorned with a pediment. The left and right returns also have shaped gables and broad stacks, and there is a projecting wing at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
