Description
The Charles McCheane Drinking Fountain, located at the junction of Western Parade in Southsea, Portsmouth, is a monument built in 1889 and restored in 1977. Made of stone, the fountain features two opposed water points and four basins equipped with chained iron cups. An inscription on the fountain commemorates Charles E. McCheane, who passed away on November 2nd, 1888, and notes that the fountain was erected in November 1889 by friends from the Royal Portsmouth Corinthian Yacht Club, which McCheane helped establish in 1880. A bronze plaque indicates that the fountain was restored by the residents of the Castle Road area and the Portsmouth City Council to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from 1952 to 1977.
