Description
Swiss Cottage School House, now part of Portsmouth High School for Girls, is a villa built in 1833 by T.E. Owen. It features painted brickwork and a Welsh slate roof with three diagonally set brick chimneys at the center, one to the right of center, and two at the far right. The building is asymmetrical and has a Gothic style.
The exterior is two stories high and consists of three bays. The central bay has three stone steps leading to a two-story projecting porch with an ogee brick arch opening and a recessed 20th-century door at the back. On the right side, there is a narrow casement window under a similar brick arch, with corbelled timber framing on the first floor, a facing gable, and a bargeboard. The first floor features a small rectangular oriel window with two-light mullioned four-pane casements supported on brick corbels, along with a cornice and a slate hipped roof.
To the left, there is a one-story recessed section with a verandah on the far left, which includes two narrow ogee brick arched openings that continue onto the south face, topped with a slate lean-to roof. Adjacent to the verandah is a slightly projecting facing gable with a bargeboard and a two-light mullioned casement, each with a segmental hood and set beneath a four-centred arch. Behind the recessed bay on the first floor is a three-light casement, each light containing four panes, set under a flat brick arch with a drip-stone.
On the right side of the porch, there is a one-story lean-to section with a facing gable similar to that on the left of the porch, featuring two blinded lancet-headed narrow casements. To the right and on the first floor, there is a four-pane sash window, also set under a segmental brick arch. At the rear of the building is a four-story tower with a projecting parapet. The interior has not been inspected.
