Description
The Church Room in How Hill, Twerton, is a Sunday school room dated 1816. It features a front made of squared and coursed rubble, an ashlar porch, rubble returns, and a slate roof. The building is a single-storey, nearly square room with a lower porch attached on the right and a 20th-century range added to the rear.
The exterior includes two glazing-bar sash windows with cambered heads set in plain surrounds, positioned between an incised tablet that reads "Twerton Sunday School 1816." There are plain pilasters at the quoins, and the low-pitched hipped roof has box eaves. To the right, there is a set-back ashlar wall with a flush six-panel door beneath a cornice and a blocking course with coping. On the rear wall, there is a tall ashlar stack located in the valley between the original and new ranges. The interior has not been inspected.
This building is an early example of its type, reflecting the educational trends of the Evangelical Movement.
