Description

Three churchyard monuments are located approximately 3.5 meters south of the south aisle of the Church of St Michael. These monuments date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are primarily made of limestone, with some sandstone panels.

The first is the Tanner monument, situated about 3.5 meters south of the first bay of the south aisle. It features a weathered ledger with a moulded edge on a fluted frieze above inscribed panels and pilasters adorned with leaf and flower drops. The short ends have a single panel, while the long sides have paired panels, all resting on a moulded base. The earliest decipherable date on this monument is 1823, commemorating members of the Tanner family.

The second is the Broad monument, located approximately 2.5 meters south of the Tanner monument and adjacent to the churchyard boundary wall. This monument also has a weathered ledger with a moulded edge, above single and paired fielded panels and a moulded base. The earliest decipherable date is for Samuel Broad, 1864, although its design reflects the 18th century.

The third is the Pool monument, found about 2.5 meters southwest of the Tanner monument. It features a very thick ledger with a cyma-mould edge, above single and paired sunk panels in soft grey sandstone, flat pilasters, and a moulded base. The earliest decipherable date is for Pool, 1850, but the ledger is likely older. This monument is in poor condition, with panels on the south side collapsing as of February 1994.
