Description
The raised pavement in front of the Full Moon Public House and Church Room dates from the early 19th century. It is made of squared rubble, with stone flag or asphalt paving, and features steps and dressings in limestone ashlar. The pavement consists of two sections, separated by a vehicular entry between the Full Moon and the Church Room.
On the left side, a narrow asphalted pavement runs the full width of the Full Moon, supported by a retaining wall that is approximately half a metre high at its highest point, sloping down to the roadway at the right end. This pavement continues opposite the Church Room, positioned just behind the public pavement. At the left end, the low retaining wall has been altered, rising to about half a metre and extending approximately 10 metres to a return of seven stone steps with coursed risers.
There is a break where the pathway crosses at the gateway, and then the stone flag pavement continues to the entrance of the Church Room, featuring a ramp with a stone curb. This ramp returns in three steps to the left and rises one step to the entrance landing, all equipped with a simple 20th-century iron handrail.
To the right of the steps, there is a boundary wall with piers and a gate opening. This wall is constructed of coursed and squared limestone, topped with steep weathered coping. It sweeps up to a central pair of square piers with flared cappings, which formerly held gates. The wall rises to approximately 3 metres at the street end, with a square pier, and about 1.5 metres at the opposite end, leading to another pier above the paving.
