Description
This is a workshop built in the early 19th century, located at the rear of No. 5 Nelson Place East, next to a chapel. The structure features coursed rubblestone and a pantile roof, with timber and glass on the front of the first floor. It has a rectangular plan and includes a single-storey lean-to at the back. The building is two storeys high and has a sixteen-window front. Consoles at the eaves above the window frames highlight a continuous row of seemingly fixed twelve-pane windows, some of which contain crown glass and have horizontal trefoil ends on the overlights of the first floor. Below the windows, there is continuous horizontal planking that is interrupted in the centre by double half-glazed loading bay doors, which have similar windows. A continuous bressumer over the ground floor acts as lintels for six nine-pane windows and a 20th-century set of double doors located to the right of centre. The interior has not been inspected. This building may have been Isaac Pitman's School, established in 1839.
