Description
No. 4 Cleveland Place West is an end terrace house built around 1860. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a double pitched slate roof with stacks located on the right party wall and at the rear. The house has a double depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a four-window front. The stop-chamfered arises frame the plate glass sash windows. To the right, there is a full-height parapeted segmental bay that contains three windows on each floor, along with a parapet cornice and a ground floor cornice and lintel frieze that extends across the left-hand range, which has a returned plinth. The door to the left has two rows of three vertical panels, with a window above and a smaller window to the far left. The left return, which faces the river, has two windows and features a lower ground floor and basement. The front gable end is adorned with moulded kneelers, and there is a canted bay to the left of the ground floor. The lower ground floor and basement area has a hipped roof in front of the rear gable end. The interior, inspected by Bath Council in 1982, retains an old kitchen in the basement that includes a small range and a console mantelpiece with a palmette design underneath, as well as a large four-panelled dresser with shelves and three drawers. This property is included for its group value with the adjoining earlier terrace, which consists of Nos. 5-10 Cleveland Place West.
