Description

No. 1 Gloucester Street is a terrace house built in the late 18th century, with a 19th-century addition on the right and 20th-century alterations. The front and left side are made of limestone ashlar, while the rear features a mix of ashlar and rubble. The house has a parapeted roof covered with artificial slate, with a parapet at the rear of the original range on the left. The left range is shallower and has a full-height extension with a lean-to roof against the original range. The gable wall on the left is coped and has an ashlar stack with some early clay pots.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic on the left, and four storeys with a basement on the right, arranged in a two-window range. The first floor has a plate glass horned sash window to the left in a splayed reveal with a timber sill, and a similar but smaller sash window to the right. The second floor has a similar sash window to the left in a splayed reveal with a stone sill, a smaller sash window to the right in a splayed reveal with a timber sill, and another similar sash window above on the third floor. The ground floor features plate glass horned sash windows on both the left and right in splayed reveals with stone sills, and a central six-panel door with flush and fielded panels, set in a pedimented Doric doorcase with one Pennant step. There is a grating in the pavement leading to a basement opening on the right and a blocked basement opening in the plinth below the ground floor window on the left. A 20th-century rooflight is present on the front slope to the left. The rear elevation is partially visible and has a 20th-century window on the second floor. The interior has not been inspected.
