Description
This is a late 18th-century terrace house, later altered in the early 19th century, and with a 20th-century addition. It is now used as shops. The house is constructed of limestone ashlar with a double Roman tile roof, featuring a gable to the left return. The plan is based on three units.
The exterior is symmetrical, with two storeys and a basement, and a three-window arrangement to the upper floors. A coped parapet rises above the gable to the left return, and there’s a returned cornice and a ground floor platband. The upper floor windows are eight/eight-pane sashes, while the central window is a six/six-pane sash. Balconettes are above the first floor windows. A bell-head lead downpipe is located to the left of the central windows. The shop front is characteristic of a butcher’s shop and has a wide canopy supported by plain wrought iron brackets, covering the front and the left return. The shop windows are modern, with plate glass panes, set on brackets. There are tiled plinth steps to each side. A modern door and blocked overlight are to the front right, while to the right of the shop there are steps leading to a flush six-panel door with an eight/eight-pane sash window to the left.
The interior has not been inspected. The lease for No. 3 is dated 5th March 1768, although it is unlikely that any original features from this date remain.
