Description
This is a three-storey, attic, and basement terrace house at number 19 Rivers Street, built between 1770 and 1775 as part of the Rivers Street development designed by John Wood the Younger. It is now used as flats. The house is constructed of limestone ashlar to the front, with rubble to the rear and basement. The roof is a mansard style with Welsh slate.
The front elevation features three windows per floor. The first floor has sash windows with ovolo moulded architraves, cornices, and stone sills on cut down console brackets. The second floor has similar sash windows with stone sills. The ground floor has two sash windows to the left and a six-panel door with a flush beaded panel and single glazing, set within a pedimented Doric doorcase with a wrought iron foot-scraper and lamp bracket. Beneath the crossover is a modern glazed timber screen with a plank door, and modern area steps lead to the pavement. Basement windows are plain sashes with stone sills, screened with a modern glazed timber screen. A triple dormer with plate glass sashes is visible in the roof. The rear elevation, partially visible, has sash windows and a triple dormer. The interior has not been inspected.
Attached to the front of the house are wrought iron railings and a gate with shaped heads on limestone bases.
Rivers Street was developed by John Wood the Younger on land acquired from various sources, including Sir Benet Garrard, Sir Peter Rivers Gay, and Thomas and Daniel Omer. Different Bath builders were employed to implement Wood’s design. Building leases and rate books, alongside Walter Ison’s “The Georgian Buildings of Bath,” provide further information on the property’s history.
