Description

This is a three-storey terrace house with an attic and basement, built between 1770 and 1775, and later altered in the 20th century. It is part of the Rivers Street development by John Wood the Younger. The front of the house is faced with limestone ashlar, while the plinth to the basement is of rubble. The rear features a mix of ashlar and rubble, and is topped with a parapeted mansard roof covered in Welsh slate, with a coped party wall to the left and two ashlar chimney stacks incorporating some early clay pots.

The front has a three-window facade. The first floor features three plate glass sash windows with ovolo moulded architraves, friezes, cornices and lowered stone sills supported by cut down console brackets. The second floor has three six/six-pane sashes with similar architraves and stone sills. The ground floor has two plate glass sash windows on the left with splayed reveals and stone sills, and a six-panel door to the right, enclosed within a painted pedimented Doric doorcase with a single pennant step. Three steps lead to a pennant paved crossover with a cast iron foot-scraper. Basement windows consist of two six/six-pane sashes and a 20th-century glazed door. The roof has a double dormer with plate glass sashes. Other external features include a band course over the ground floor, a modillion cornice, a coped parapet, a wrought iron link horn to the right of the front door, and a lead downpipe shared with the adjacent property at No. 22 Rivers Street. The rear elevation has six/six-pane sashes and a small single-storey extension.

The interior of the property has not been inspected.

Attached to the front are wrought iron railings with shaped heads on limestone bases.

Rivers Street was developed by John Wood the Younger in phases, with land acquired from various sources including Sir Benet Garrard, Sir Peter Rivers Gay, and Thomas and Daniel Omer. Different Bath builders were involved in constructing the development based on Wood's designs.
