Description

No. 39 is a terrace house dating from 1770 to 1775, part of the Rivers Street development by John Wood the Younger. The front is faced with limestone ashlar, while the rear elevation is not visible. It has a double pile, parapeted mansard roof covered in Welsh slate, with two ashlar stacks on a coped party wall.

The house is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and features a two-window front. The first floor has two two-pane sashes with ovolo moulded architraves, a frieze, cornice, and a lowered moulded stone sill with simple wrought iron balconettes. The second floor also has two two-pane sashes with ovolo moulded architraves and stone sills. The ground floor has a two-pane sash to the right, a six-panel door with flush beaded, fielded, and glazed panels to the left, and a C19 cast iron knocker with a one-step Pennant pedestal in a Doric doorcase, with three steps leading to a Pennant paved crossover. The basement contains two two-pane sashes and a plank door with a four-pane overlight in an ashlar infilling. A double dormer has plate glass sashes. A band course is located above the ground floor, and a modillion cornice and rendered parapet are continuous with Nos. 38, 40 and 41 Rivers Street. The interior has not been inspected.

Attached to the front are wrought iron railings with shaped heads on limestone bases.

Rivers Street was developed by John Wood the Younger over several parcels of land, with different builders implementing his design. Building leases and rate books document the history of the development.
