Description

This is a three-storey, attic, and basement terrace house, now converted into flats, built between 1770 and 1775. It is part of the Rivers Street development designed by John Wood the Younger. The front of the house is constructed of limestone ashlar, with rubble for the plinth of the basement and the rear elevations. The roof is a mansard design with Welsh slate, and features a coped party wall with two ashlar stacks including some early clay pots.

The front elevation has a three-window design. The first floor has three plate glass sash windows with ovolo moulded architraves, friezes, cornices, and lowered stone sills supported by cut-down console brackets. The second floor mirrors this design; the ground floor has two plate glass sash windows in splayed reveals with stone sills, and a six-panel door with flush, fielded, and glazed panels, original 19th-century cast iron door furniture, a painted pedimented Doric doorcase, and a stone step. The basement level has two six-over-six sash windows with stone sills, a small plastic window beneath the crossover, and a partially infilled ashlar crossover featuring limestone steps with slate inserts and a wrought iron handrail. A double dormer with plate glass sashes is present in the roof. A band course runs over the ground floor, above which sits a modillion cornice and a coped parapet, with a lead hopperhead at the eaves on the right. The rear elevation features six-over-six sash windows and a small, single-storey extension. The interior of the property has not been inspected.

Attached to the front are wrought iron railings and a gate set on limestone bases with shaped heads.

Rivers Street was developed by John Wood the Younger on three parcels of land, with different builders implementing Wood’s overall designs. Ground for Nos. 16-28 and 36-47 was conveyed from the Rivers Estate, while Nos. 28-35 were constructed in conjunction with Russell Street on ground bought from Thomas and Daniel Omer.
