Description
No. 38 is a terrace house, built between 1770 and 1775, as part of the Rivers Street development by John Wood the Younger. It is now divided into flats. The front is faced with limestone ashlar, while the rear is of rubble construction. The house has a mansard roof covered with Welsh slate, with Roman tiles to the upper rear slope. It features coped party walls and two ashlar stacks, one with some original clay pots.
The two-window front has three storeys, an attic, and a basement. The first floor has two plate glass sash windows with ovolo moulded architraves, a frieze, cornice, and lowered moulded stone sills. The second floor has two similar plate glass sash windows with stone sills. The ground floor has a two-over-two pane sash window in a splayed reveal with a stone sill to the right, and a six-panel door with flush beaded and fielded panels, including glazed sections, to the left. The door is set within a pedimented Doric doorcase with three steps down to a Pennant paved crossover. The basement has an eight-over-eight pane sash window in a plain reveal with a stone sill, a modern half-glazed door under the crossover, and modern area steps. A double dormer window features plate glass sashes. A band course runs above the ground floor, and a modillion cornice and coped parapet continue with the adjoining properties at Nos. 39, 40 and 41 Rivers Street. A lead downpipe is located on the right-hand side. The rear elevation is not visible.
The interior of the house has not been inspected.
Attached to the front are wrought iron railings and a gate with shaped heads on limestone bases.
Rivers Street developed from three parcels of land acquired by John Wood the Younger, involving leases from Sir Benet Garrard, Sir Peter Rivers Gay, and Thomas and Daniel Omer. Historic records, including building leases and rate books, detail these acquisitions. Walter Ison's book, 'The Georgian Buildings of Bath', provides further information.
