Description
No. 43 is a house, now flats, dating from 1770-1775. It is part of the Rivers Street development by John Wood the Younger. The front of the building is constructed from limestone ashlar, with rubble below the basement windows and to the rear. It has a double pile, parapeted mansard roof, covered with Welsh slate, and a coped party wall with two ashlar stacks topped with early clay pots.
The house is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and features a three-window front. The first floor has three two- or three-paned sashes set within splayed, ovolo moulded architraves, incorporating friezes, cornices and lowered stone sills resting on console brackets. The second floor also features three six/six-paned sashes, similarly framed. The ground floor has two two/two-paned sashes to the right, in splayed reveals with stone sills, and a six-panel door to the left, incorporating fielded and glazed panels, a cast iron knocker and a single Pennant step leading to a pedimented Doric doorcase, painted. A single step leads to a Pennant paved crossover with a cast iron footscraper. The basement has two plate glass sashes with horns, in plain reveals with stone sills, and a recessed, currently unviewable door. Pennant steps with a wrought iron handrail provide access to the basement. A double dormer features six/six-paned sashes. A band course runs above the ground floor, and a modillion cornice sits below a coped parapet. A lead downpipe, shared with No. 42 Rivers Street, is attached to the left side. The partially visible rear elevation has three grouped four/four, six/six, four/four sashes to the second floor, and a double dormer with plate glass sashes.
The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
Attached to the property are wrought iron railings and a gate, with shaped heads on limestone bases.
Rivers Street was developed in three phases by John Wood the Younger, involving several land transactions and different Bath builders. The site of No. 43 was developed on ground conveyed from the Rivers Estate to Wood in 1768 for a 99-year lease.
