Description
4 Gloucester Street is a terrace house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 18th century and features a shopfront that was altered around 1870, along with some 20th-century additions. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar, which is painted at the front, and has a parapeted roof with double Roman tiles on both the front and rear. There is a stack that rises from the rear wall on the left, which has been truncated, and an external stack added to the rear right, now without pots.
The building stands two storeys high with a basement and has a two-window range. On the first floor, there is a two-over-two horned sash window on the left in a plain reveal with a stone sill, and to the right, there is a similar four-over-four sash window. The ground floor features a mid to late 19th-century shopfront with a plate glass window on the right, which has a moulded panel below it, and a 20th-century door with an overlight on the left. This door is framed by three pilaster strips that flank the door and window, topped with moulded consoles and a moulded cornice. The six-panel door, which has fielded panels, is approached by three concrete and Pennant steps leading to the centre of the ground floor. To the right, there is a plate glass horned sash window in a plain reveal with a stone sill. The basement is lit by a 20th-century window with a grating, and there is a grating in the pavement in the stall-riser of the shopfront. Additionally, there is a cast iron grating for an opening in the plinth to the right, and a small 20th-century window above the plinth to the right. The building features a plinth, a band course over the ground floor to the right, a moulded eaves cornice, and a coped parapet. The rear elevation is partially visible and has no windows on the first floor.
The interior has not been inspected. The lease for numbers 3-5 Gloucester Street dates back to 5th March 1768, which is related to the adjacent houses on Rivers Street.
